Jaxton Su

Jaxton works intuitively across the mediums of painting, installation and new media. Intrigued by the wondrous ways of how various natural phenomena resonate with our subjective selves, he often includes elements of nature and geology as recurring tropes within his experimental creations as he attempts to bridge metaphorical parallels between the sublimity of nature and the unfathomable human mind. Drawing inspirations from science fiction, cyberpunk, surrealism and gamification, he is currently delving into the poetics and possibilities of different spatial constructs within our contemporary world perpetuated by hyper-connectivity, hyperreality and alienation. Through his allusive works, he hopes to compose diverse enthralling narratives that might spur a change in perspective towards our everyday realities.

Jaxton Su (b.1988) is a visual artist who works with painting, installation and new media. He holds a Master of Fine Art from The Glasgow School of Art (United Kingdom) and a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Nanyang Technological University (Singapore), where he currently lectures. Notably, he has exhibited at National Gallery Singapore, Clydebank Museum and Art Gallery (UK) and Jangsaengpo Culture Depot (KR), amongst others. He has also presented internationally in an array of festivals, residencies and exhibitions including Taiwan Annual, Geumgang Nature Art Biennale, Athens Digital Arts Festival, LightNight Liverpool, SIM Residency Iceland, and Art Safiental. Jaxton was awarded the StudyUK Alumni Award in Culture and Creativity by the British Council Singapore in 2022, and the Best in Art Award by Pioneer Junior College, Singapore in 2006.

Aside from his practice, he is also actively involved in mural painting, community art and curatorial projects. His narrative-driven murals, which are usually painted in an impressionistic style, can be found around the streets of Singapore and have been widely featured on various local media and art trails. With a passion of making the arts accessible to the masses, Jaxton has initiated a variety of community-based projects to engage different communal groups, including “Archipelago - Arts in Your Neighbourhood 2020”, “Home is where the heart is - Silver Arts 2019” and “Our Nano World - Edinburgh International Science Festival 2018”. As an independent curator, he is interested in challenging traditional formats of presenting art and encouraging appreciation towards experimental contemporary art. He was selected as an international curator at Alt Space Loop, Seoul in 2020. Some of his notable curatorial projects include “The Unsettled Dust” – a touring Asian Short Film Festival, “Dare you do this? FFFF it!” – a Taiwan Gangshan Dist Contemporary Art Warehouse International Exchange Program and “Power Play” – a contemporary art festival in Singapore.
