Fishes out of water is an exhibition that consists of works by Nienting Chen (Taiwan), Supapong Laodheerasiri (Thailand), Sooa Lee (South Korea), and Jaxton Su (Singapore) – four visual artists from different parts of Asia. Now gathered in Glasgow, which is on the other side of the world, they have to grapple with a disparate sense of time and culture (and an abundance of rainfall), altering their daily rhythms in the process.

Taking inspirations from their everyday lives and the changes they have experienced – both internally and externally, each artist has created works using water as a focal point. Water, an element that is omnipresent and vital in our everyday activities, is fluid and formless, much like the abstract idea of the flow of time. It can also follow a cyclical process, similar to our rhythmic daily episodes, or be as erratic as our changing temperaments. By directly or indirectly involving water as a medium, the artists have created an array of works that invite the viewer to explore each artist’s subjective reality, now altered by their unique experience of living in Glasgow.
